Opening of the Week: Yasashisa no Riyuu by Choucho(Hyouka OP 1)

Hyouka entering my life has honestly been one of the best things to happen to me. I’m currently seventeen episodes in, and honestly, I am not sure what to do after its over. My enjoyment of the show has placed it squarely in my top ten of all time. A decent portion of my enjoyment can be attributed to the show’s soundtrack, especially the show’s two openings. Hyouka’s second opening, in terms of execution, is definitely better than the first, but my enjoyment of the first is overruling that. I will probably talk about the second opening in another addition, but for this week we’ll be covering Yasashisa no Riyuu by Choucho.

Hyouka’s first opening, both in lyrics and in animation, deals largely with Oreki’s struggle of adjusting to his new “high energy” lifestyle with the Classic Lit Club. Oreki, usually keeping to himself, now has to deal with the other Classic Lit Club members, including one Eru Chitanda, who Oreki seems to have a unique connection with.

The music in the opening is honestly nothing special. It is your typical J-Pop song with a horn section inserted in to give it a more classical music feel. The vocals Choucho do compliment the music well, with her slightly deeper tone giving the song a much-needed grounding.

Overall, while not being particularly unique, it fits the style of Hyouka quite well. Even compared to the second opening, it has a lot going for it in terms of musicality.

Which of the two is your favorite opening? What other soundtracks would you recommend I listen two? Let me know in the comments below. Thanks for reading and bye for now, Friendos!
