With My Hero Academia, Tokyo Ghoul:re, and Megalobox all airing this season, there is a lot of quality to enjoy in the spring 2018 season. One show that has already stood out in a big way is Golden Kamuy, the story of a Russo-Japanese War veteran bent on discovering a large stash of gold in order to save his friend’s wife from blindness.

There is a lot to like about this show so far. One thing that stands out immediately is the show’s main character, Saichi Sugimoto. As a war veteran of a bloody conflict with Russian soldiers, Sugimoto has been mostly looking just to complete his mission and help his fallen friend. Overall, while he comes across as a little bit crazy, I get the feeling that despite the amount of killing that will likely take place over the course of the series, it will be pretty hard to hold any of it against him.

The show’s other main character, Asirpa, also seems pretty awesome. It really is nice to have what looks to be a strong female character in a lead role, and not have to compromise her strength for Sugimoto, who, so far at least, see’s her as an equal partner, and literally offered to give her most of the gold, so long as he has enough to help his friends wife.

If there is really one bad thing I could say about the show so far, it would be the C.G. on those bears because my god do they not look good. It was honestly really jarring having to watch the fight with both of them because every minute it was on screen I just wanted to look away. Hopefully, there will not be a lot more of that though.

Overall, though, this is a show I am really excited for. It is not often that we get a piece of historical fiction played out in anime, and especially not a premise this exciting. Honestly, my first instinct was to compare this show to One Piece, except this actually seems like its going to be good, and will also end at some point.
