Another week, more news. Let’s get started.
Tokyo Ghoul:re Season 2 Premieres October 9th
It was announced earlier this week on Sunday that the second season of Tokyo Ghoul:re that is airing this season will start airing on October 9th. The season will be continuing the show which initially aired its first season earlier this year.
Also, this week came a new PV for the show’s second season which details some of the story in the upcoming episodes. The trailer shows what looks to be more of Kaneki’s conflict with his identity, and where he wants to be within society.
Russian State Media Outlet Releases False Information About Anime
In a report from the Russian State Media Outlet, the agency claimed that among other things, Anime is responsible for children having “suicidal thoughts.” It also claimed that anime would make them “rebel against their parents,” and that kids would be “inclined towards homosexuality.”
The article goes on to document the stories of a few different parents who say their kids have been adversely affected by anime. Despite that, the article does not cite any sources for their claims other than the support of a woman named Elena Ivanova.
The article was released last week, and according to the view count at the top of the page, has been viewed over 140,000 times.
New Anime SSSS.GRIDMAN to Air this Fall
Studio Trigger recently released a trailer a few key visuals for a new anime they are producing this fall. SSSS.GRIDMAN will air starting on October 6th, will follow Yuta Hibiki, a high school student who wakes up one day only to realize he doesn’t remember who he is.
The show is a reboot of an anime that aired between 1993 and 1994 and was produced by Tsuburaya Productions.

Am I a Top 5 Aniblogger?!
Irina from I drink and watch anime wrote a pretty funny post about the different types of anime bloggers in the community. I’m not sure exactly which one I fall into, but I could definitely fit some other bloggers into her categories. Either way, It was still a great read. I would highly recommend you read it.
Made in Abyss is an Awesome Adventure
Lethargic Ramblings posted a great write-up of their personal experience with one of 2017’s break-out hits: Made in Abyss. They talk about how initially they weren’t particularly fond of it but have very much changed their minds. Go ahead and give it a read.
Should I be Watching Takagi-san?
Jon Spencer of Jon Spencer reviews wrote a mini-review of the 2018 slice of life comedy series, and it is well written to be sure. He keeps it short, pointing out some of the best aspects of the show. Even if you don’t end up watching it, go ahead and give the review a read.
Gosick is pretty cool
Irina also had an awesome review of the anime series Gosick this week. It’s a BONES production which came out in 2011 eleven and is a relatively obscure series. Irina does a great job of talking about everything in the show, from its visual style to its narrative structure. Check it out.
Our Cells Sure are at Work
Scott from Mechanical Anime Reviews had a more personal post this week in the form of a discussion around Cells at Work! In the post, he talks about some personal stories that relate to the inner workings of our bodies. Some are funny, some are a bit more serious. All are fantastic reads.
Hitting Milestones
Finally, Biblionyan wrote a post about celebrating hitting 500 followers on her blog. They’re doing a Q & A plus a giveaway for those who comment on the post. They’ve written great stuff in the past, so be sure to check them out and show some love.

I’ll be honest, this week was a lot more interesting for me than the last few weeks. Sure, we got some new anime releases, and as always people writing some awesome stuff, but a lot of interesting things have been announced this week, and I’m just generally excited about what’s to come.
New Releases
Here’s what’s new when it comes to shows.
Shonen-Jump Rom-Com “We Never Learn” Gets TV Anime

On Monday, the official website and Twitter account for the TV anime “We Never Learn” Announced new details about the project. Among these new details are the director of the show, who will be Yoshiaki Iwasaki(The Familiar of Zero, Love Hina). It was also revealed that the screenwriter will be Go Zappa, who screen wrote “Chronicles of the Going Home Club” and that Masakatsu Sasaki will be the character designer. Sasaki has previously done character designs for “Saki” and “A-Channel”
The show’s story will follow a well-educated boy hoping to successfully tutor two girls in order to get them scholarships. The only problem is that the two girls want to study outside of their talents. One is a science nerd who wants to study Liberal Arts, and the other is a reader who wants to be a scientist.
Fairytail Website Releases PV for Upcoming Series Finale
The official website for the Fairytail Anime released a Promotional Video for the final season of the fairytail anime. The video, shown above, gives small details about the new series, like character costumes and a glimpse of the actual story, among a cut of action scenes from the show.
Simultaneously, the site also released promotional art for the next season. The art depicts Natsu and Zeref, two characters who, in the last season, were revealed to be related.
The series is slated for a release this fall, with the first episode being released in October.
Bleach Live Action Movie Coming to Netflix
In a video that came out last week, Netflix announced their list of new arrivals for September. The most interesting reveal on that list? Bleach. According to the list, the live-action adaptation of bleach that was released in Japanese theatres earlier this year will be coming state-side. The movie will be released on Netflix on September 14th, according to the same video.
The live action movie covers the first major arc of the Bleach manga, known as the Substitute Shinigami Arc, because of its focus on the main character Ichigo Kurosaki.
New Service “InkyPen” Coming to Nintendo Switch
A new service called “InkyPen” recently announced that they would be available on the Nintendo Switch. The service is, surprisingly enough, a comic streaming service. As they write on their website, “InkyPen allows you to read thousands of comics from a wide selection of publishers and artists on Nintendo Switch. All content is available upon subscription, no premiums, no piecemeal content.”
This information is also interesting for another reason: the service seems to only be available on the Nintendo Switch. According to the Press Kit available on their website, The Switch is the only device on which the service is accessible.
The Price per month will be 7.99, and will give readers access to over 10,000 different comics and graphic novels, including many different manga series.

This week has a pretty diverse but short amount of news. Some of it you may or may not have been expecting, and some you might have already known about. Either way, let’s get into it.
“Death Note” Film Made by Netflix to Receive Sequel
It was announced recently by Netflix that a sequel film to Adam Wingard’s 2017 Death Note adaptation is in the works. Currently, not much is known about the film, including whether or not Wingard will return to direct it. However, Greg Russo, a writer for “Mortal Combat” and the upcoming “Resident Evil” movie, is currently working on the script.
Many were unsure of the potential of a sequel to Netflix’s live-action rendition of Death Note because of the film being met with middling reviews. However, Wingard had previously pitched the live action version as a trilogy but was given a single movie instead.
Kakegurui Second Season to Air in January 2019
It has been confirmed this week that Kakegurui’s second season, which was confirmed for production earlier this year, is scheduled to be released in January of next year. The announcement was made in tandem with the announcement for a second season of the show’s live-action drama counterpart. It has also been confirmed that all of the previous staff will be returning for the season and studio MAPPA will again be handling the production.
The story of Kakegurui centers around a school where your ability to gamble determines your social status, and if your really bad, you might even become a slave. However, none of this scares the school’s newest transfer student, Yumiko Jabami, who sets out to have the ultimate gambling experience.
Crunchyroll to Release Original Content Through Elation Studios
Elation, the parent company of Crunchyroll and VRV, announced yesterday that they would be opening a new division dedicated to creating original content. Named Elation Studios, one of the divisions first projects will be an original series on Crunchyroll named High Guardian Spice, a show about four girls going to school in order to be Guardians, protectors of the magical realm.
Elation Studios will be headed Magaret Dean, who formerly worked at Stoopid Buddy Stoodios and is the current president of Women in Animation. The Studio’s first project High Guardian Spice is being created by Raye Rodriguez, who has said that he’s been a lifelong anime fan. Audu Poden, the director of Animaniacs, will be mentoring Rodriguez during the show’s production.
Vinland Saga Staff Revealed
The official website for the production of the highly popular manga Vinland Saga announced on Monday the show’s key staff and released a visual for the show. Shuhei Yabuta, who has previously directed Inuyashiki, will be directing the show, and Studio Wit, responsible for Attack on Titan and The Ancient Magus Bride, will be handling the production. Additionally, the animation director for Hunter X Hunter Takahiro Abiru will be handling the character designs.
The story of Vinland Saga centers around Thorfinn, the son of one of his clans greatest warriors. However, one day his dad is killed by a mercenary group, and in order to get his revenge, Thorfinn joins the group. This decision gets him involved in the possible overthrow of England.

There has been a lot of exciting news, from new trailers to movie updates, a lot of high profile people and IPs are making returns, and it is exciting, to say the least. With that being said, let’s get started.
New Anime
A list of some of the new series that have been announced recently
One Punch Man Season 2 Gets New Trailer, Reveals New Villain
On Sunday, Viz Media revealed that the next season of the fan favorite anime One-Punch Man will be airing in April of 2019. Along with that information, Viz also released a trailer that gave a few details about the upcoming season. One of those details was the name of the next season’s main villain, Garou.
Talk about the show’s next season had already been going even before this trailer due to the announcement that J.C. Staff would be replacing Madhouse as the studio producing the show. It is worth pointing out though that many of the staff that worked on the original series were freelance, and many of the staff are returning to work on the show’s second season.
One-Punch Man centers around Saitama, a man who trains so hard that he becomes stronger than everyone else, and uses his power to become a hero. However, because of this, he finds his work as a hero to be boring. No matter what he does, he can’t find someone who won’t lose with one punch.
“Jeanne d’Arc and the Alchemy Knights” Trailer Revealed
A new trailer for the upcoming series “Jeanne d’Arc and the Alchemy Knights” was released last week. The trailer depicts the shows two main leads, Jeanne and Montmorency, and their relationship. The trailer also shows some of the shows side characters, and what appears to be Jeanne going insane after the two kiss.
The series has been scheduled to be released on October 5th and will air as part of the Fall 2018 anime season. It is being adapted from the light novel work of author Mikage Kasuga and Illustrator Tomari Meron, the story of which revolves around Montmorency. He wants to be an Alchemy Knight, and being the son of a nobleman allows him to do just that. However, after the beginning of the Hundred Years War, the school shuts down and Montmorency is forced to leave. On his journey out of the country, he runs into a mysterious girl named Jeanne.
Funimation Releases Dubbed Trailer for “My Hero Academia: Two Heroes”
Yesterday, Funimation released an English trailer for the My Hero Academia movie entitled “My Hero Academia: Two Heroes.” The trailer features the show’s main cast, including the students from 1-A, as well as the movie’s featured characters, those being Melissa Shield, David Shield, and Wolfram. The English voice actors for the main series will be reprising their roles, but joining the cast will be Erica Mendez as Mellisa, Ray Chase as David and Keith Silverstein as Wolfram.
The story of the movie takes place after the events of the second season before class 1-A is sent to the summer training camp. The group is invited to I-Island, a moving fortress that boasts the world leading researchers on Quirks and Hero Items. However, while the group is there, a group of villains breaches the Islands security system and traps everyone. It’s up to Deku and All-Might to save the day.
“MIRAI” Heads to U.S. Theatres on November 30th
It was announced this week by GKIDS that the latest film to be directed by fan-favorite Mamoru Hosoda titled “Mirai” will be coming to U.S. Theatres on November 30th. There are plans to show both dubbed and subtitled versions of the series in theatres where it is being played. GKIDs has recently been bringing many anime films to the west, including 2016’s break out hit “Your Name” and Studio Shaft’s “Fireworks” earlier this year.
The story of Mirai focuses on Kun, a four-year-old whose family has recently been blessed with their baby Mirai, whose name means future. One day, after running off into his family’s garden, Kun meets Mirai, but from the future, and a teenager. The two travel through time and discover their family’s rich history.
With Comiket 94 Comes a New Trailer for “A Certain Magical Index”
This week has had a lot of awesome trailers, and one, in particular, has fans extra excited: The one for “A Certain Magical Index.” At Comiket 94, a new trailer for the show’s third season showed both the returning cast, as well as some of the newer characters that will be appearing in season 3. The previous cast will be returning in the new series, which will be debuting on October 5th.
The show’s story centers around Toma, a student living in Academy City, where many espers come to learn how to use their powers. Toma believes he has no powers to speak of. One day, a nun finds him and claims to have photographic knowledge of important magical texts kept inside her brain. Toma then vows to protect her.

Ninja isn’t Streaming with Women?
Megan Farokhmanesh of The Verge wrote an opinion piece about the recent debacle with popular streamer Ninja and his decision to not stream with females in fear of online harassment. I know this isn’t anime related, but it is certainly an important story to talk about, and I think she has a great take on it. Definitely give it a read.
Watamote – Anime vs Manga
Cactus Matt of Anime Q and A did a fantastic comparison of the Watamote Manga and its Anime counterpart. I’m sure it will be contentious for some, but I think the reasoning behind his conclusion is solid. Check it out.
What is Quality Content
Chris from Peach’s Almanac wrote a more reflective piece on his ability to write as well as what even defines good content in the first place. Something I’ve spent a long time thinking about as well, and tbh, I don’t think I could have put it as well as him. Give it a read, for sure.

Its been a pretty slow week in interesting anime related news, so I thought I would make this week another week of blogger shout-outs. I will mention it briefly because I know its a popular series: A Certain Magical Index Season 3’s release date has been confirmed, which you can read about here.
Aside from that, however, there is a ton of stuff I want to give some recognition, so let’s get started.
Create-a-Story Tag
Some of you might have seen the one tag in particular that has been making the rounds in the aniblogging community as of late, and that would be the create a story tag, which was created by Keiko.
There were a lot of bloggers, including myself, who took part in the tag over the last week, so here are the ones I thought were super cool.
100WordAnime – A fun little story about a couple falling down a cliff.
Mechanical Anime Reviews – A more slice of life centered story about a future couple in the making and their experience in the science building.
A Nerdy Perspective – A guy walks into another guy’s cabin, and the two have an honest conversation about their feelings for one another.
Maquia and Late Blooming
This is cheating a bit since this was from last week, but I never got the chance to give it a shout-out, so I’m doing it now. appropriant of Perpetual Morning did a wonderful essay talking about both themselves and Maquia. It was an extremely relatable piece for me. I highly suggest you give it a read.

I’ve been trying to get back into the swing of things and get back on a consistent schedule, but that has been a bit difficult, mostly due to my own laziness. However, even though this is coming out a little late again, I do plan on getting back to giving you your weekly dose of anime news on Thursday once again. New Releases
Here are some of the new anime that will be coming out in the future.
“Karakuri Circus” Gets Anime This Fall
From the mangaka of Ushio to Tora, Karakuri circus will be taking center stage this Fall season. It was announced this week that Kazuhiro Fujita’s second work after Ushio to Tora will be getting an anime adaptation. The show will reportedly have 36 episodes and will be animated by Studio VOLN, who also produced the anime version of Ushio to Tora.
The story follows a young boy who wants to be a puppeteer. However, is life gets crazy after strange people start targeting him. He eventually inherits 18 Billion Yen from his dad and then runs into some people who agree to protect him.
Kyoto Animation Announces “20th Century Electricity Catalog” Anime
In a tweet from their Esma Bunko Editorial Department, Kyo-Ani announced their newest anime project: “20th Century Electricity Catalog.” The show will be a bit of new territory for the studio, as it will be their first ever historical fiction series. The story will be based on the novel by Hiro Yuki, who won an honorable mention at the company’s Kyoto Animation Awards.
The story is set during 1907 in Fushima, where Inako and her father, a famous brewer, live a very traditional life. One day, while visiting a shine, Inako meets Kihachi, a boy who is the polar opposite of traditional. When it comes time for Inako to get married, all she can think about is Kihachi, and just before her arranged marriage, Kihachi comes to rescue Inako and take her away.
“Overlord” Gets New RPG Game
In a new release using the RPG Maker software, “Overlord” now has a new game out. The game focuses Ainz and Nabe and their quest to get to Adamantine class adventurers. The game is currently available on Windows, MAC, and online browsers, and, as of writing this article, has two playable parts with more available in the future. The RPG Maker software has also been used to make other games such as Angels of Death, which has anime adaptation that is currently airing in the Summer 2018 season.

I’ve always loved reading articles from The Afictionado, largely because, as someone who is not in anyway apart of the LGBTQ community, her articles focusing on pop culture and LGBTQ representation are always insightful. Her review of the visual novel Butterfly soup is no different. For only being four hours long, she manages to go very in-depth about the game without giving away much in plot. Even if you’re not interested in the game, I would highly recommend reading her thoughts.
March Comes in Like a Lion and Mentors
Lastly, I had to share an OWLS post from a fellow member and unofficial member of the March Comes in Like a Lion Fanclub, Karandi. Karandi’s piece on the various mentor-like figures in March Comes in Like a Lion is very insightful, and I would highly recommend checking it out.

Most of the time on This Week in Anime I will go through news stories and talk about the most important ones of the week. Recently, I started giving shoutouts to other bloggers and articles that I found cool or worth a read. This week, I decided to do that but on a bigger scale by making this week’s This Week in Anime a Shout-out edition. This time, instead of covering news stories, I want to give full attention to some of the other great articles I read this week.
Also, apologies again that this is coming out a day late.
Irina from I drink and watch anime poses a serious question about the responsibility of anime, and media more generally speaking, to deliver morally sound content to audiences. Definitely an interesting topic of discussion and one that I am sure many would like to participate in.
Fellow OWLS blogger Mel decided to write their post this month on K. In it, they talk about the various Mentor-like relationships that exist in K. If you like the series at all, I would highly suggest giving it a read.
Ang of CouchCruisin’ gave her reaction to one of Summer 2018’s more talked about series, Angels of Death. While I personally still have more of an optimistic view about the series, at least as of episode two, I can understand where she is coming from. Go and give it a read.
Scott from Mechanical Anime Reviews broke down two of Summer 2018’s other shows, both with very similar premises but very different executions. You should absolutely give it a read as well.

Sorry I missed last week. I was planning on releasing it a day late after I had settled in from my trip to Anime Midwest. Btw, I went to Anime Midwest. I never actually made an update about that, so I apologize about that as well. Anyway, without further ado, your weekly dose of anime-related news.
New Anime
Here are the new announcements for this week.
Aggretsuko Receives Second Season
At a panel during Anime Expo 2018, Netflix announced that one of their more popular shows, Aggretsuko, will be receiving a second season. The announcement was made during their NETFLIX ANIME panel, where they also talked about the release date of Castlevania season 2. The show will be released sometime in 2019
Aggretsuko’s story follows an Anthropomorphic Red Panda named Retsuko, who works at a terrible desk job that she hates more than anything else. In order to get rid of her anger, she goes to Karaoke and sings Death Metal.
Netflix’s Ultraman Adaptation to be Released in 2019
Along Aggretsuko and others, the newest incarnation of a much older series Ultraman will be coming to Netflix next year. The show is based on the Manga by Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimiguchi in 1967. A specific release date has not yet been confirmed, but it will be a worldwide release so there will be no delays.
Ultraman follows Shinjiro, a normal teen living his normal teen life when all of sudden he gets blessed with incredible powers. The “Ultraman Factor” as its called, awakens within him, and he must now use his powers to protect the earth.
Studio Trigger Becomes the First Studio to Use Patreon
This Week, Studio Trigger, creators of shows such as Kill La Kill and Little Witch Academia, has launched their very own Patreon. The Page already has over 2,500 supporters and the studio is now receiving over 8000 dollars a month. On the studio’s page, they say that Trigger “strives for a global audience and values communications with our fans.”
It is no secret that animation studios often have very little money to finance new projects so it would make sense to set up a Patreon page. As their page further describes, “With your support, we would like to forward funds into various aspect of the studio. Possibly a new line of merchandise, attending/conducting more events, or simply providing a little more to our staff.”
Many in the anime community, including prominent Anime YouTuber Digibro, argued that studios should move to a more people focused business model and rely more on services like Patreon.
Princess Mononoke to Return to Theatres for Select Screenings
As part of the 2018 Studio Ghibli Fest, one of the groups most famous works, Princess Mononoke, will be airing in theatres once again for a small period of time. Both GKIDS and Fathom Events will be sponsoring three dates on which the film will premiere: Sunday, July 22, 12:55 Local time, Monday, July 23, 7:00 Local time, and Wednesday, July 25, 7:00 Local Time.

A Better Anime Awards?!
Ayano of KawaiiPaperPandas is collaborating with Raistlin on a new project that has been tenuously named the WordPress Anime Awards. After much anger at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards last year, she and Raistlin decided that it was time to start their own.
Anime That Ruin Childhood Dreams
Scott of Mechanical Anime Reviews put out a list of series that on the surface look innocent, but are actually quite terrifying. Many series like this look like this because of the aesthetic quality of anime production, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be truly horrifying. A great list and an article you should definitely give a read.

Sorry, this is coming out a day late, I was feeling a bit distracted and not really in a mood to write. Some painful memories recently got stirred up again and it put me in a really weird place, but now I am ok again. Anyway, on to this week’s news

Golden Kamuy Season 2 Will Air in the Fall
It has now been officially announced that the popular manga turned spring 2018 anime adaptation will now be receiving another season. The show will reportedly be airing in the fall season of this year, and will have all of the staff return to work on the show, as well as again being animated by Studio Geno.
Golden Kamuy centers around Sugimoto, a Russo-Japanese war veteran who, after finding out his friends wife will soon go blind, heads out on a mission to find a hidden treasure that will help him get her the medicine he needs. Along the way, he meets up with various dangerous individuals who also happen to be looking for the treasure.
Kadokawa Releases Trailer for Overlord Season 3
On top of a few promotional images, Kadokawa has now also officially released a trailer for the widely popular Overlord series.
The trailer highlights some of the upcoming plot points of the new season, as well as displaying some of the grittiness the show is well known for. The show’s third season will be produced by Madhouse, and Satoshi Hino will be returning to voice the show’s main character.
Overlord takes place in the world of an MMORPG that is set to shut down. After a player refuses to log out of the game, he finds that many of the world’s NPCs take on personalities of their own.
Konosuba to Receive Full-Length Film
Fans of the instant hit parody series Konosuba will be pleased to find out that the series will be receiving a full-length feature film sometime in the future. Many details about the show’s production are not yet known as of the writing of this piece, but it has been confirmed that the show will have a shift in studios, as J.C. Staff will be taking over for Studio Deen.
Konosuba’s story follows Kazuma, a NEET who, after dying from shock, is given a chance to be reborn by the goddess Aqua, who he requests comes with him as he starts his new life in another world.
Hiro Mashima Reveals New Fairytail Spinoff Manga
After a slew of announcements from Mangaka Hiro Mashima earlier this year about future projects, including one about his newest Manga Eden’s Zero, Mashima has now revealed one of the destinies of his hit series Fairytail. Mashima announced this week the name of one of the new fairytail spinoff’s that he has planned for the future, that being Fairytail Hero City. Details about the specific story have yet to be released, but reportedly, the manga will be out sometime this fall.
