30 Day Anime Challenge – Day 6: The Anime I Am Waiting To See

Hello, Anifriends

For today’s 30 Day Anime Challenge, I’ll be talking about an anime I have not seen but I really want to.

There are a lot of contenders for this category, especially since there is so much from past seasons that I just have not had the time to watch. One contender ultimately stood out though, among the massive ocean of things that I have been anticipating.

That show would be: Re:Creators

ReCreators

Most of what I know about this show has come from people who have heaped almost exclusively praise on top of it. While I am sure there are flaws with it, as has been pointed out by many, I just cannot help but be fascinated with the idea of anime and video game characters coming to life for a battle royale. Sure, battle royale anime are a bit overdone at this point, but the themes that seem to be present in the story make it a very compelling show.

Another reason I want to watch it though is because of the soundtrack. Like, my god is Hiroyuki Sawano good at making music. I remember a solid week of listening to the soundtrack of this show non-stop after I first hird it, without having seen the show. I still actively listen to the both the OPs and Jam out whenever them come on a playlist. Now that I think about it, I might end up doing an Opening of the Week post about them before I even see the show. Guess I should hurry up on that.

30 Day Anime Challenge – Day 5: An Anime I Am Ashamed I Enjoyed

Hello, Anifriends

Welcome back to the thirty-day anime challenge, and for today I’ll be talking about an anime that I am ashamed to have ever enjoyed. Oh, boy.

img_0268

This category was a bit harder to answer, mostly because I have never been particularly ashamed of watching anime, especially when I was younger and my sense of shame was in its early stages of development. But after thinking about it for a while, I realize there is one show in particular that I really did not ever need to watch.

That anime is: Queens Blade. Uuuuuuuugggh….

Queen's Blade

Before I get the inevitable flood of criticism for even having watched the show, I will say 1) Even as a stupid fourteen-year-old, I never particularly thought the show was good, and 2) the only reason I got past the first episode is that it had a somewhat interesting premise, and honestly I just had nothing better to do(kind of wish I had been blogging back then just so I can see what fourteen-year-old me would have articulated).

Although to be fair to Queen’s Blade, it never was really worse than average. In fact, it probably sits somewhere right on top of mediocre. And for a Studio Arms production, it probably ranks in the upper half.

If you do not know anything else about Queen’s Blade other than the image above, do not look it up. It is literally not worth your time, and it really was not worth mine either. Its just sort of this awkward thing that I have to live with knowing that I watched and like, invested time into.

Yikes.

30 Day Anime Challenge – Day 4: My Favorite Female Anime Character

Hello, Anifriends

Another day, another challenge. For day four, I’ll be talking about my favorite female character. For this challenge, I think I might have to cheat a little.

img_0268

There are two female characters who I just cannot help but list here. The first, if you saw yesterday’s challenge, might make sense. She is cold, overly withdrawn from the world, and also somewhat relatable. I am talking about Yukino from Oregairu.

Yukino

Yukino, for me, falls in the same lane as Hachiman. She very much represents a caricature of herself, and can often time come across as unnecessarily mean to those around her for no reason. But when you look into her past, it makes a lot of sense. Because she comes from money, she has been protected and isolated, and because of that, has little in the way of experience in making friends. I think part of what makes her one of my favorite female characters is just how much she compliments Hachiman while also being his equal in status. Both of the characters face similar problems, and as is later revealed, Yukino is largely the source of his problems. But even then, the two characters come to understand each other.

My other tie for first place, if you pay attention to this blog, also really should not come across as a huge surprise. That being: Hina from March Comes in Like a Lion.

Hina

I don’t think I am alone in saying that the second season’s emphasis on bullying and the emotional impact it can have on a person hit pretty close to home. Bullying is something that a lot of people go through, either because they do not recognize it as bullying it just go along with it, or were too scared to tell anyone. It really is one of the worst parts of growing up, and while Hina’s might have been a bit of an extreme case, it still can’t help but feel relatable.

But even before the show’s second season, Hina was a ball of sunshine and one of the most enjoyable parts of the show.

30 Day Anime Challenge – Day 3: Favorite Male Anime Character

Hello, Anifriends

For the third day of the thirty-day anime challenge, I am going to be talking about my favorite male anime character, who some of you might recognize immediately, even before I say his name.

img_0268

My Favorite male character is, in some ways, a complete hyperbole of a human being, only denoting the worst that exists in people while not doing a great job at exploring the better side of humanity. In other ways, however, he’s a lot more reflective of me than I would otherwise like to admit.

My favorite male character is Hachiman Hikigaya from Oregairu, and yes I am serious.

Hachiman I can understand why some might see it as overdramatic to relate to a character like Hachiman, but I really do not feel the same. Sure, he is overdramatic, and a lot of the time he can be a real dick over little stuff, over the course of both seasons, but while a lot of his philosophy can seem a little edgy 15-year-old Atheist-ish, some of it rings very true.

One scene that I often point to as an explanation for why I like him so much is the scene in the middle of the show, where he and Yukino are in the school council and Yukino is clearly getting all of the work. Talking to the student council president, Hachiman points out that the symbol for people looks like a person leaning on another, as opposed to what most people see as two people supporting each other. Hachiman uses this as a segway into the criticism that the people in the student council are simply using him and Yukino in order to not have to work, while still getting all the glory. It’s a situation that’s fairly relatable, especially if you have done a group project where your stuck doing all the work.

30 Day Anime Challenge – Day 2: Favorite Anime I’ve Watched So Far

Hello, Anifriends

Welcome back to the second day of the thirty-day anime challenge on The Aniwriter. For the second day, I’ll be focusing on my favorite so far.

img_0268

Before I tell you that, though, I should first explain my philosophy behind calling something my favorite and calling it the best, because, generally speaking, I think they’re two completely different things. Calling something your favorite, at least to me, means that you personally like something the most, despite its flaws.

Calling something the best, on the other hand, is much different. The best would imply that you have weighed it against all other things in a relevant category. This is also the mindset I will have with the rest of this challenge. With that in mind, the category for day two is my FAVORITE anime, not what I think is the best.

My FAVORITE anime is Phi Brain: Puzzle of God.

Phi Brain

Phi Brain has always been both a source of a lot of fun as well as a lot of confusion. On one hand, the first season was a pleasantly enjoyable and a little cheesy. On the other hand, though, the show was so lowkey that it feels weird that it got not two, but three seasons.

Still, this show has brought me a lot of joy, and watching the ending of it all be just as cheesy as the rest of the show was the highlight of my 2014. If you have not seen it, which I am honestly going to assume is the majority of you, then I would seriously suggest checking it out.

30 Day Anime Challenge – Day 1: My First Anime

Hello, Anifriends!

So as I was reading through other blogger’s posts recently I noticed there was something that everyone except me has yet to do: The 30 Day Anime Challenge. For those unfamiliar, the challenge consists of one post every day where said blogger talks about the topic for the corresponding day.

For the first day, I’ll be talking about the first anime I ever watched.

So, what is it?

Bakugan

The first anime I ever watched was Bakugan Battle Brawlers, a show about a game created by friends Shun and Dan after cards started mysteriously falling from the sky. The show starts with a focus on Dan, who is intent on becoming the best Bakugan player of all time. Dan is joined by other members of the “Bakugan Battle Brawlers,” Runo, Julie, Alice and Marucho(in the English dub).

Bakugan really was one of the cornerstones of my childhood, not only because of the anime but because of the toys too. I would spend hours and hours watching the show as well rolling the Bakugan onto cards and watching them open up. It was extremely satisfying.

The show itself, though, honestly was not that bad. Even going back to it multiple times since my time being a ten-year-old, I never noticed anything that made it atrocious compared to most other kid shows. Sure, it’s no Pokemon or Digimon, but it was extremely fun for what it was.
