Feeding the Flames

Welcome, weebs, to Animated Observations

Welcome back, everyone, to Feeding the Flames. For those unfamiliar, this is my totally original series where I share some nonsense takes of mine and see how people react. If you feel strongly about any of these takes, feel free to debate them with me in the comments. Anyway, here are my garbage opinions.

Most of the Fate/ franchise is mid

Don’t get me wrong, Fate/Zero is still probably a top 10-20 anime of all time, and for what it is worth, I think the Fate/Stay Night remake still gets a bit too much hate, but almost everything which is not related to the three routes from the original visual novel is pretty meh. I get that people still like the characters and so more content is always welcome, but on a storytelling and animation basis, it does not hold a candle to what the best of the franchise has produced.

My Hero Academia is at its peak

Season two is probably when most people became interested in the anime, and for what it is worth, it is genuinely compelling. However, I would argue that the most recent season of the anime adaptation is the best the series has been thus far. Though giant battle scenes are nothing knew in action anime, they do allow for a diverse array of perspectives, and character development along with it. I probably would not have even remembered Mirko exists let alone cared about her as a character if it were not for the insane fight sequences that open up the season. Deku seems to be a weak-point for a lot of people when it comes to MHA, but the show also seems to be clearing that up a lot with this season.

Most JRPG’s are way too damn long

Don’t get me wrong, the feeling of sinking a lot of time into a series and having it pay off can certainly be its own kind of reward. However, part of me is also incredibly cynical and thinks that most of the time those series never really earn their long run. A lot of this has to do with really unrewarding side quests or open words that don’t actually have much filling them. It is one thing to have a longer story or gameplay experience that is worth sharing, it is another entirely to pad game time with useless assets and boring, unimportant characters.

Dr. Pepper

This is not at all related to anime, video games or whatever, I just want it to be known that I drink the superior soda #notsponsoredbutwouldbe.

The isekai crash is coming (at least I hope so)

The amount of dime a dozen, caught in the same generic video game fantasy world and then become the most op character in a matter of an episode or less dreck that is just commonplace among anime seasons now is frankly a bit disheartening. It is hard to imagine how many more interesting stories are getting passed up because studios, however justified the fear may be, are choosing “safer” options. Predicting trends is hard, but I do hope something changes relatively soon.

A Trip Down Memory Lane: Revisiting Final Fantasy 13

Welcome, weebs, to Animated Observations

I mentioned it in a blog post a while back, but I recently started streaming for fun. Its been a great experience so far, and since I have a lot of friends and acquaintances who also stream I have been getting a lot of positive support. So far its been a lot of “Hearthstone” and “Slay the Spire,” which has been great because card games are, like, one of my favorite genres. However, since I have the opportunity anyway, I wanted to carve out some time to re-visit one of my favorite games of all time: FF13

As of the release of this post, I am only about 2 hours in or so, which means I have not gotten past the intro section. But honestly, everything about the game is still almost as good as I remember.

For starters, apart from the spotty details on the hands and certain facial features, the animation and character designs in the game are f**king amazing. Granted, most JRPGs and anime adjacent media tends to make their main characters stand out. However, it feels like the designs actually match the world, and utilize some really fun color palettes as well. Lighting’s Military’s uniform in particular, while not actually looking the most militaristic, is still unique enough to be noteworthy.

Speaking of characters, I absolutely adore most of the ones in this game. Even as far as “Final Fantasy” games go, there are some really cool storylines that are tied together amazingly with the use of foreshadowing and flashbacks, which is saying something consider how lazy writers can often get using these techniques. The best is probably the one between Vanille and Kazh, but I won’t say too much more so that I don’t spoil anything. The only character that comes across as kind of lame is Hope, as it feels like he does not do a whole lot for the majority of the game, since he mostly spends his time just following everyone else around.

It is hard to talk about the plot of the game without giving too much away, but a lot of the game is focused on Lightning and the gang taking down the Fal’cie, and a being that corrupts human beings, turning them into “dangerous” L’cie. At first it can feel like a pretty generic action/adventure style game, but it very quickly become a story about questioning government narratives, and fighting back against a fascist state, which I can definitely appreciate a lot more now.

Given that is has been a long time since I have made it all the way through, its hard to give the game a fair and accurate review. This means that, in all likelihood, I will be revisiting it after I finish my playthrough to give a more detailed and honest evaluation.

If you would like to join me on my continuing journey through the game, I will be live every Thursday, starting somewhere around 8-10 EST on my Twitch going for a few hours at a time. If you just want to come say hi, though, that is totally fine as well.

Did you guys ever play FF13? How did you feel about it? Let me know in the comments below.

First Impressions: Fire Emblem Three Houses

Welcome, weebs, to Animated Observations

I have never really taken time to explore games on this blog, not because I do not play them, but because there have not been many worth talking about that have come out recently. Well, I say recently, by which I mean relatively speaking. One game definitely worth talking about is the newest addition to the “Fire Emblem” series, “Fire Emblem Three Houses.”

The game came out on July 26th of this year and was immediately met with a lot of praise. Given that I have played about half the games in the series, and enjoyed pretty much all of them, I was excited to hear good things. From what I have played so far, that being roughly the first six chapters of the game, my expectations have not only been met but heavily exceeded.

For starters, the game looks incredibly gorgeous, especially in comparison with its counterparts. Now, part of this is due to the simple fact that the Switch is a much more powerful and traditional console. Considering that almost all of the other “Fire Emblem” games have been on either a much older systems or a handheld, there were, of course, going to be limitations on how good the game could look.

However, there also seems to have been a lot more detail put into the game. For example, many different terrains found on the battlefield, including the buildings, seem much more well-drawn than in previous iterations of the series. This also goes for the characters models, which in previous games were all 2D, but in “Three Houses” have been upgraded to 3D.

The game-play is also noticeably more interesting, mostly due to the integration of a time management mechanic. Time management mechanics have been utilized heavily in other JRPG series such as Persona, but despite being influenced by those series, the mechanic is still implemented in a unique way that ties in directly with the story.

You, as the newest professor at a school for knights, need to interact with and train your students. The more you interact with them, the better a professor you become, allowing you to do more things, such as getting better battalions for your units, as well as the ability to recruit new units from other classes.

Battles have always been my favorite parts of many of the games in the “Fire Emblem” series. Given that for the last few games players have been able to choose between casual and classic mode, the game has gotten significantly easier. Still, even with that casual setting, some of the battles thus far, such as the ones with the Death Knight, have felt legitimately difficult at times.

However, another important aspect of the battles is how they implement the story being told, and “Three Houses” manages to do this quite well. So far there has only been a lot of build-up and mystery, but it is definitely laying the seeds for a good story to come, and makes every battle worth paying attention to, even when it does seem pretty easy.

I will most likely be finishing this game, and am expecting to enjoy it thoroughly. So far, it has taken everything that makes “Fire Emblem” such an iconic series, and made it even better. Long time fans who have yet to play this game are missing out on an incredible experience.
