30 Day FMA Challenge: Day 24

Welcome, weebs, to Animated Observations

It is day twenty-four of the 30 Day FMA Challenge.

24. Saddest Moment

The death of Maes Hughes is often brought up as one of the defining moments of the original series, and still holds a lot of weight in the Brotherhood version, despite happening much sooner and with not as much development for Hughes. However, a scene that holds a similar amount of weight, at least for me, is the moment after his funeral, where Mustang stands solemnly at his grave. After talking to himself for a while, Hawkeye approaches, asking him if he is ok. Mustang responds with a yes, but noting it is a terrible day for rain. After Hawkeye points out that is is not raining, Mustang corrects her, while shedding a tear.

Even in brotherhood, where Hughes is significantly less important, this scene still holds a ton of weight, Hughes had been Mustang’s friend for a while, and the two became closer after their experience together during the war in Ishval, where they realized just how terrible the military can be. It is during the war that Mustang vows to become the Fuhrer and make the country better, and where Hughes vows to help him.

The death of his best friend hits hard, but knowing the situation that surrounds him and needing to move forward makes mustang feel like he is unable to show emotion, which is why he quips about the rain being bad, as an emotional defense. Hawkeye also realizes this, which is why she goes along with it, not wanting to upset him.

It is a scene with a lot of emotional weight, and in context is one of the saddest scene’s in the whole show.

30 Day FMA Challenge: Day 22

It is day twenty-two of the 30 Day FMA Challenge.

22. Best Revenge

I would also be totally fine with calling this category “most satisfying moment,” because that is also a lot of what makes this scene great. In the moments before this scene, Mustang confronts Lust, who uses her immortality to survive his attacks, despite being burned to crisp, with him being mortally wounded, and presumed dead. Lust then leaves, meeting with Hawkeye and Al further down in the underground tunnels.

Lust attempts to kill the two, but Al protects Hawkeye using his armored body. However, in an unexpected moment, Mustang shows up, looking like he is about to pass out, having used his alchemy to sear his wounds closed. Mustang then uses his alchemy continuously to burn Lust as she regenerates, eventually using up her philosophy stone and killing her for good.

The scene feels satisfying because of the the way in which Mustang is able to come back from his earlier to defeat and just utterly obliterate Lust. Not only is it, in that moment, a relief to see him alive, but the act of taking out taking out his rage on Lust in that is, in a way, cathartic.

30 Day FMA Challenge: Day 12

It is day twelve of the 30 Day FMA Challenge.

12: Favorite Member of the Millitary

My favorite member of the military is most certainly Riza Hawkeye. Aside from being an all around cool character, she also has a lot of compelling personal development. Much of her role in the beginning is assisting Roy, who in turn is helping the Elric brothers. However, later on, at least in Brotherhood, she becomes much more important, as not only a hostage, but also as our view of Fuhrer Bradley. During this part of the series, we see how deeply she cares for those around.

Aside from her own personal development, she also serves a role in assisting Roy Mustangs’s development. In the beginning, it is shown almost immediately that the two are important to each other, both in the way they interact and through their expressions towards each other. Later on, it’s shown that the reason the two are so close is because Roy learned his Alchemy from Hawkeye’s father, and his death became a turning point for both of them.

In both cases, the struggles she faced were intense, but made her who she is, someone who is both strong-willed and loyal to Mustang.

30 Day FMA Challenge: Day 3

Welcome, weebs, to Animated Observations

Day three of the 30 Day Anime Challenge.

3. Favorite Male Alchemist

As many smash bros players might say, Roy’s our Boy!

Roy is definitely one of the more exciting elements of FMA, largely due to his flash alchemy. For those who for some reason are unaware, Roy Mustang uses flame alchemy by having transmutation circles on his gloves, and is a fairly high in rank when it comes to the Amestrian military.

I also appreciate him because of his presence/importance to the story of Fullmetal Alchemist. Most of the time, Ed and Al do not particularly like Roy, but whether or not they realize it, he always has there back. Not to mention Mustang also brings a lot of humor to series.

Who’s your favorite Male Alchemist? Let me know in the commments.
