First Impressions: Fire Force

Welcome, weebs, to Animated Observations

If you have been following this blog for a while, you all may remember that this is not actually going to be my first impressions of “Fire Force,” as I did do a reaction to the first episode a while back. However, seeing as how I was initially pretty lukewarm on the series when I first watched it, I wanted to try revisiting it, given that its second season is now airing. Despite not having much interest initially, I will say that upon re-watching the first few episodes, I am much more invested in the show than I was previously.

For those unaware, “Fire Force” tells the story of Shinra Kusakabe, a new recruit to the 8th division of Special Fire Force Company. The company’s mission is two fold: to defend against spontaneous human combustion, which creates beings called infernals, and to find out the reason behind why these beings began appearing at random. As for Shinra, not only does he want to become a hero, but aims to solve the mystery behind his mom and brother’s death 12 years ago.

The thing that initially turned me off from the series, aside from all of the people singing its praise and my irrational need to be skeptical of things other people enjoy, was actually Shinra himself. I felt like I could not really pin him as a character, but now that I have watched a little more, I can see that he is actually a mix of Okubo’s previous work, most immediately like a mix of Soul and Black Star from “Soul Eater”

While it may not be immediately obvious given the studio’s relatively recent rise to prominence, David Production has done some amazing work, most notably with everyone’s favorite meme “Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.” It seems as though the studio has indeed put the same level of love into “Fire Force,” as the quality of the animation is almost always on point. There are a few awkward moments, like near the end of the third episode where there were clearly some very liberal uses of still frames, but otherwise the show’s action scenes more than make up for it, at least so far.

The music is also a high point for the series. Not only are the opening and ending both great listens, but the rest of the soundtrack manages to bring at the best in the series, especially during action scenes.

Overall, my feelings of doubt in “Fire Force” were extremely misplaced. The series is fun and exciting, and sometimes that is all you really need to make a good series. While I honestly cannot say where it will go from here, I sure am excited for the journey.

Fire Force Episode One Reaction

Welcome, weebs, to Animated Observations

I talked about in one of my recent posts how I had a lot of hope for Fire Force due to it being from the same creative mind that gave us Soul Eater, Atsushi Ookubo. Soul Eater was, if nothing else, a fun action adventure with a cool cast of main characters. Its quality has remained for as long as its been around, and is still famous even among newer anime fans. So, does Fire Force live up to that? Well, so far, yeah.

For those who are not aware, Fire Force focuses on a future where for an unknown reason people are spontaneously combusting, and turning into creature known as Infernals. However, as time goes on, people with the power of Infernals while retaining their human form emerge. One of these people, a boy named Shinra, has the ability to create fire from his feet, and decides to join Fire Force Company 8. who help stop Infernals.

Despite there only being one episode so far, Fire Force still comes out of the gate as incredibly impressive. One of the things that makes it so impressive so far is its concept. The idea that anyone at any time could just turn into an Infernal creates a world always filled with tension and what ifs, because nobody knows if it will be them. It also means that there can be a lot of interesting story beats that the main cast will be able to focus on.

The other main thing that makes it great so far is the main character Shinra. Even in just the first episode there are a lot of things that make him unique. His family got killed in a fire he created with his powers, and the fact that he smiles when he’s nervous, something he literally cannot control. I would comment on the rest of the Company 8 crew, but I think they still have not had enough time to flesh themselves out as much as Shinra. However, for the first episode, they were pretty cool.

Overall, I do not have any complaints. It might be fair to say that the first episode was a little goofy for the level of seriousness the show is trying to go for, but it still did not ruin the episode, and it mainly came from Shinra, which is understandable given his condition. I definitely look forward to continuing the show.

30 Day Anime Challenge – Day 8: My Favorite Anime Couple

Hello, Anifriends

Whether it be from a movie, TV show or anime, I think its fair to say that everyone has a least one couple that they love to watch. Their chemistry is great, and every second their on-screen makes you laugh and cry at the same time. Today I’ll be talking about my favorite couple in anime.

As soon as I saw this category, I immediately knew who I would be writing about. Without a doubt, my favorite anime couple is Shinra and Celty from Durarara!!

Celty and Shinra.png

There were a lot of great things about the first season of Durarara!!, especially the first half. The characters were always on crazy adventures, and the relationships between the main three, as well as the other side characters, kept the show interesting and exciting. But easily the best part for me was Celty and Shinra’s relationship.

Celty, a legendary figure known as a Duluhan, was being studied by Shinra’s father. As Shinra interacted with Celty more and more, he began to fall in love with her, which lead to them living together in Ikebukuro. I mean, what is there to say about them other than that there weirdly adorable?

Well, a lot actually. Not only is their setup uniquely engaging in its own right, the ever-changing dynamic between the two and the way they continue to see both themselves and each other in new light makes their story one of the most legitimately emotional parts of the show.

To be completely honest, I would recommend people watch Durarara!! just so they could see these two together. It is absolutely something worth your time.
